The Signature on Every Song

Johann Sebastian Bach composed over a thousand works in his lifetime — cantatas, fugues, concertos, and some of the most complex music the world has ever heard. But at the bottom of nearly every manuscript, Bach wrote three small letters: S.D.G. Soli Deo Gloria — "To God alone be the glory."

This was not a casual habit. Bach believed that music existed for one purpose: to point beyond itself toward the One who gave it. He once wrote that the aim of all music "should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul." Whether composing for a royal court or a small Lutheran church in Leipzig, Bach understood that his extraordinary talent was not his own. It was borrowed. It was entrusted. And so every note carried a signature that said, "This is not about me."

Purpose works the same way in the life of a believer. We are each given gifts — some dramatic, some quiet — but none of them are accidents. The Almighty does not hand out talents without intention. As Paul reminds us, "We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10).

You may never compose a symphony. But every act of faithfulness — every kindness, every honest day's work — can carry that same signature: Soli Deo Gloria. Your life is the manuscript. What are you writing at the bottom?
