The Signature on the Blueprint

In 1943, a small congregation in Birmingham, Alabama gathered in a borrowed basement to plan their first church building. They had no architect, no contractor, and exactly forty-seven dollars in their building fund. When a local alderman laughed and told Pastor James Abernathy that his people had no business trying to build anything on Dozier Street, Abernathy unrolled a hand-drawn blueprint on the man's desk and pointed to the bottom corner. There, beneath the measurements and the rough sketches, he had written five words: "Commissioned by the Living God."

"Sir," Abernathy said quietly, "you didn't assign us this work. So you don't get to cancel it."

That congregation laid their cornerstone eleven months later.

When Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem mocked Nehemiah's broken walls and questioned his right to rebuild, Nehemiah did not argue politics or produce a permit. He pointed upward. "The God of heaven will give us success," he declared. "We His servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem."
