The Silver That Changed Everything
In Les Misérables, Jean Valjean is a broken man — nineteen years in prison have hollowed him out. When Bishop Myriel opens his home to this hardened ex-convict, Valjean repays the kindness by stealing the bishop's silver in the dead of night. Caught by the gendarmerie and dragged back to face the man he robbed, Valjean braces for the accusation that will send him back to the galleys forever.
Then the bishop does something staggering. He looks at the officers and tells them there's been a misunderstanding — he gave Valjean the silver. And then he turns, picks up two silver candlesticks Valjean hadn't even taken, and presses them into his hands. "You forgot these," he says quietly. "I gave them to you too."
When the police leave, the bishop leans close and speaks words that haunt Valjean for the rest of his life: "I have ransomed you from fear and hatred. Now I give you back to God."
That moment doesn't just spare Valjean from prison. It dismantles him. For the first time, he encounters forgiveness so complete, so costly, and so undeserved that it cannot be ignored. It demands a response. It demands a new life.
