The Sixth Sense: I See Dead People (2 Kings 6:16-17)
In the film The Sixth Sense, we meet a young boy named Cole Sear, who lives in a world that is both haunting and isolating. He possesses an extraordinary ability that causes him to see what most people cannot: the spirits of the dead who wander the earth, trapped in their unfinished business. Imagine the fear that grips his heart as he walks through the halls of his school, feeling the chill of a ghostly presence brushing against him, while his classmates remain blissfully unaware. For Cole, this gift is a heavy burden, a constant reminder of life beyond life, until he encounters Malcolm, a compassionate child psychologist who helps him reframe his terrifying experience. Malcolm gently guides Cole to see that his gift is not a curse, but a calling—an opportunity to bring peace to those who are lost.
This echoes the moment in 2 Kings when Elisha prays for his servant, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Suddenly, the servant is no longer blind to the reality around him; he sees the hills alive with horses and chariots of fire, the heavenly army standing guard. The spiritual realm isn’t a distant concept; it’s immediate, vibrant, and often just beyond our perception.
Cole's journey is one of transformation—from fear to faith, from isolation to ministry. As he learns to embrace his gift, he becomes a beacon of hope for the wandering souls, guiding them toward peace. Like Elisha’s servant and young Cole, we too are invited to pray for spiritual sight, to see the struggles and needs around us, and to recognize our own calling to be instruments of comfort and healing in a world that so desperately needs it. In doing so, we find that spiritual sight is both a burden and a divine invitation to participate in God’s redemptive work among us.
