The Song That Took Five Years to Write
In 1978, Leonard Cohen sat down to write a song called Hallelujah. He thought it would come quickly. It didn't. Over the next five years, Cohen filled notebook after notebook with draft verses — somewhere around eighty of them — searching for the right words to capture something he could feel but couldn't yet say.
When the song was finally finished in 1984, his record label refused to release the album in the United States. They didn't hear what Cohen heard.
