The Soul's Warfare: Israel's Victory Over Inner Enemies
The human soul, like ancient Israel, exists as two warring camps. In the higher regions dwell principles of innocence, hope, love, justice, trust, kindness, purity, and tenderness—the kingdom of heaven itself. Below lurk selfishness, pride, vanity, contempt, injustice, faithlessness, harshness, impurity, and violence—the kingdom of hell. No peace exists between them, as Isaiah declared (Isaiah 57:20-21).
Life is perpetual conflict, yet the virtuous possess advantage. They strive on heaven's side, assisted by heavenly powers and the Saviour Himself, receiving seasons of blessing that culminate in peace. The wicked, conversely, struggle against their better nature, opposing inner conviction, stifling conscience, smothering noble impulses, hardening themselves against Elohim.
Israel's historical wars illuminate this spiritual battle. Three nations infested their borders: the Amalekites, Midianites, and children of the east—descendants of Abraham dwelling at Canaan's edges but never within it. They represent those bordering the Church yet remaining outside it, acknowledging gospel truth intellectually while refusing to love and obey it. These enemies actively destroyed Israel's sustenance and growing corn, embodying opposition to progressive religion.
Amalek proved most malignant, insidiously pursuing stragglers from Israel's wilderness march, executing the weak and weary (Deuteronomy 25:17-18). This ancient adversary symbolizes how sin's cruelest assaults target those already weakened by spiritual struggle. The victory over such foes requires divine assistance and unwavering allegiance to Adonai's purposes.
