The Soup That Becomes Wings
In 1669, the Dutch biologist Jan Swammerdam became one of the first scientists to dissect a caterpillar and discover something astonishing inside: the folded beginnings of wings, hidden beneath the skin of a creature that had never flown. Centuries later, modern biology has revealed the full story, and it is even more remarkable than Swammerdam imagined.
When a caterpillar enters its chrysalis, it does not simply sprout wings. Its body releases enzymes that dissolve nearly every tissue into a formless, organic soup. Almost nothing of the crawling creature remains. But tucked within that dissolution are tiny clusters of cells called imaginal discs, present since birth but dormant, waiting. These cells activate and begin building something entirely new: legs designed for landing on flowers, antennae tuned to the wind, and wings that will carry it across continents.
Here is what stops me in my tracks: the caterpillar carried the blueprint for flight all along. It just could not access it while clinging to its old form.
Paul understood this. "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Freedom in Christ is not a minor adjustment. It is not improving the caterpillar. It is dissolution and re-creation. The habits, the shame, the identity we built around our brokenness — God does not merely repair them. He makes us new.
The question is not whether the Almighty has placed something new inside you. He has. The question is whether you will let go of the branch.
