The Space Between the Fingers

In Michelangelo's famous fresco The Creation of Adam on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, God's hand reaches toward Adam with urgent energy. The Almighty surges forward, wrapped in a billowing cloak, surrounded by angels, every muscle straining with purpose. Adam, by contrast, reclines on the earth, his arm extended but limp, his finger barely lifted.

And between their two fingertips — that tiny, electric gap.

Michelangelo could have painted the fingers touching. He chose not to. That sliver of space is perhaps the most famous gap in the history of art, and it speaks volumes about the nature of faith.

God reaches. God initiates. God closes the distance with everything He has. But He does not force the connection. He leaves room — a breath of space where Adam must choose to reach back.

Faith lives in that gap. It is not a passive thing, not merely agreeing to a set of ideas. It is lifting your hand, however weakly, toward the One who is already reaching for you. It is the choice to extend yourself toward the God who has already extended Himself toward you.

Some of you feel that gap today. You sense God near, but the connection feels just out of reach. Take heart. You do not need the strength of the Almighty to close that distance. Even the faintest reach of a weary hand is enough. He is already doing the heavy lifting.
