The Star Above Mordor
In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King, there is a moment that has stopped readers in their tracks for over seventy years. Sam Gamgee lies exhausted in the wasteland of Mordor. The land around him is poisoned. The air reeks of ash. The task ahead — helping Frodo carry the Ring to Mount Doom — seems impossible. Every rational calculation says they will not survive.
Then Sam looks up. Through a gap in the heavy clouds, he sees a single white star, and its beauty pierces him. In that moment, a thought rises unbidden: the Shadow is only a small and passing thing. There is light and high beauty forever beyond its reach.
Sam does not receive a map. He is not given stronger legs or a clearer path. What he receives is perspective — a glimpse of something permanent shining above something temporary. And that glimpse is enough to get him back on his feet.
This is what faith does. It does not remove the Mordor from our lives. The diagnosis remains. The grief stays. The road ahead is still long and uncertain. But faith lifts our eyes above the cloud-wrack of our circumstances and reminds us that the darkness we are walking through is not the whole story.
The writer of Hebrews understood this: faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Sometimes all the Almighty gives us is one star through the clouds. And sometimes, that is more than enough.
