The Step Before the Bridge Appears
In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones faces an impossible moment. His father is dying from a gunshot wound, and the only cure lies beyond three deadly trials. The last is the most terrifying. Standing at the edge of a bottomless chasm, his father's journal offers one cryptic instruction: only a leap from the lion's head will prove his worth. There is no bridge. There is no path. There is only empty air and a fall that means certain death.
Indy closes his eyes. He lifts one foot and steps out into nothing.
His boot lands on solid stone. A bridge was there the entire time — perfectly camouflaged against the canyon walls, invisible until he stood on it. The path only revealed itself to the one willing to take the step.
Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. The Almighty does not ask us to leap because He enjoys watching us tremble at the edge. He asks because the bridge is already there. He built it before we ever arrived at the chasm.
Some of you are standing at your own edge this morning — a diagnosis, a broken relationship, a financial impossibility. God is not asking you to understand the bridge. He is asking you to take the step. The solid ground will meet your foot. It always does.
