The Step Beyond the Edge
In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, archaeologist Indiana Jones stands at the crumbling edge of a vast, bottomless chasm. His father is dying. The only cure lies on the other side. No bridge is visible. No rope. Nothing — just open air and a thousand-foot drop.
His father's Grail diary holds the final clue: the last trial requires a leap of faith. Indy looks down into the darkness, then slowly presses his fist to his chest. His jaw tightens. He whispers, "It's a leap of faith." Then, trembling, he lifts his foot and steps out — into nothing.
His foot lands on solid stone. An invisible bridge stretches across the entire chasm, perfectly camouflaged against the canyon walls. What looked like certain death was a safe passage all along — hidden from sight, but firm and real beneath his feet.
This is what the writer of Hebrews means when he calls faith "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." The Most High rarely illuminates the entire path before we take the first step. He reveals solid ground only after we choose to trust the One who prepared it.
