The Stone Two Sculptors Refused
In 1464, the Cathedral of Florence commissioned a towering block of Carrara marble to be carved into a figure of David. The sculptor Agostino di Duccio roughed out a few cuts, then abandoned the project. A decade later, Antonio Rossellino took a look at the awkward, narrow slab and walked away too. For twenty-five years, that marble sat in the cathedral yard, exposed to rain and sun — a forgotten block that two artists had deemed unworkable.
Then, in 1501, a twenty-six-year-old Michelangelo stood before it. Where others saw a ruined stone, he saw something waiting to emerge. He spent the next two years chiseling away everything that was not David, and when the cloth dropped in 1504, Florence gasped. Seventeen feet of marble had become one of the most breathtaking sculptures in human history.
There is a truth here that runs deeper than art. God looks at lives the world has written off — people who feel too flawed, too far gone, too oddly shaped for any good purpose — and He sees what they were made to become. The Almighty does not work only with pristine material. He is the master of the overlooked and the discarded.
If you have ever felt like that abandoned block of marble — passed over, left out in the weather, waiting for a purpose that never seemed to come — take heart. The Artist has not forgotten you. He knows exactly what He placed inside you, and He is not finished carving.
