The Struggle That Sets You Free
In embryology, one of the most remarkable designs in nature is the hatching of a chick. For twenty-one days, the developing bird grows inside its shell — a structure that once protected it but eventually becomes a prison. When the time comes, the chick uses a tiny calcified bump called an egg tooth, a tool built for exactly one purpose: breaking free.
But here is what researchers have long documented: if you crack the shell for the chick, it frequently dies. The hours-long struggle of pipping — pushing, resting, pushing again — serves a vital biological purpose. The exertion forces the lungs to fully inflate for the first time. It drives absorption of the remaining yolk sac into the body. The effort strengthens the very muscles the chick will need to stand and walk. What looks like suffering is actually the process of becoming strong enough to survive in the open air.
Paul understood this architecture of freedom. He wrote that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance character, and character hope. The Almighty does not always shatter the shell in an instant. Sometimes He lets us push against it — not out of indifference, but because the struggle itself is forming capacities we will need on the other side.
If you are straining against something hard right now, take heart. El Shaddai may be doing His deepest work in what feels like your longest night. The breaking through is the becoming.
