The Surgery That Sets You Free
In orthopedic medicine, there is a condition called ankylosis — the fusing of a joint caused by injury, infection, or prolonged immobility. The bones that were designed to move freely gradually lock together, calcified into rigid stillness. A knee that once bent and straightened with effortless grace becomes fixed at a single angle. The patient can still stand, but they cannot walk freely. They adapt. They compensate. They forget what full range of motion ever felt like.
The treatment is both painful and hopeful. Surgeons must break through the calcified tissue, sometimes removing bone that has grown where it does not belong. Physical therapy follows — weeks of deliberate, guided movement to teach the joint what it was always designed to do. The freedom was always in the joint's original design. It simply had to be restored.
Sin works like ankylosis of the soul. It rarely arrives as a sudden catastrophe. More often, it is the slow calcification of habits, resentments, and compromises that fuse us into postures we were never meant to hold. We adapt. We compensate. We forget what freedom felt like.
When Christ sets us free, He does not give us something foreign. He restores what was always meant to be. "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free," Paul wrote to the Galatians. The Great Physician breaks through what has locked us in place — and teaches us, gently, to move again.
