The Three Travelers: Where the Road Divides
When Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah set out together from Moab toward Judah, no observer could have predicted their separation. All three appeared equally earnest, equally resolved to return to the land of covenant and grace. Yet Elohim alone, who knows the hearts of the children of men, saw what would come to pass.
This mirrors a profound spiritual reality: many begin the journey toward Yahweh with apparent sincerity. Like the prodigal son who arose and went to his father, like the wise and foolish virgins who took up their lamps together—many truly set out (arokeim, meaning "to journey forth"). They renounce former habits of sin. They commit to secret prayer, constant study of God's Word, watchfulness over besetting sins.
Yet the trials that meet them on the road—the habits requiring acquisition, the disciplines demanding patience, the cost of true return—these separate the precious from the vile. As far as the journey lay within Moab's borders, the three could walk together. But when the real test came, when continuation demanded sacrifice, Orpah turned back.
Ruth remained.
