The Threefold Cord of God's Eternal Nature
Psalm 119:142 declares, 'Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.' Here the psalmist weaves together three immutable attributes that cannot be separated from Yahweh's character. Righteousness means God cannot deviate from what is right and just—He is the eternal standard of moral perfection. Immutability assures us that this righteousness never fluctuates with circumstance or sentiment. Truth (aletheia) completes the cord, guaranteeing that every word proceeding from His mouth is absolute and unchangeable.
Spurgeon observed that these three properties form an unbreakable unity in God's revelation. When a sinner approaches the Almighty, he encounters not a capricious deity swayed by mood, but a Being whose justice, constancy, and veracity are eternally locked together. The wicked man trembles because God's righteousness never sleeps. The believer finds rest because God's immutable truth means His promises cannot fail. A merchant who changes his weights, a judge who reverses his verdicts, a friend who breaks his word—these inspire no confidence. But Jehovah remains forever the same: righteous, unchanging, true. His law therefore is not a temporary ordinance but an everlasting standard. This is why the faithful psalmist could sing with absolute assurance, finding in these three attributes the bedrock upon which all hope must rest.
