The Time That Is Given to Us

In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf has just revealed a terrible truth: the simple gold ring Frodo inherited from his uncle is the One Ring, a weapon of immense evil. The young hobbit, overwhelmed by what this means for his quiet life in the Shire, says, "I wish it need not have happened in my time."

Gandalf's reply has echoed through generations of readers: "So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Frodo didn't choose his purpose. It chose him. And that is often how purpose works — not as a grand moment of clarity, but as a quiet realization that something has been placed in your hands, and you are the one who must carry it.

Many of us have our own version of Frodo's moment — seasons where we look at what life has handed us and say, "I wish this were someone else's burden." But the Almighty doesn't waste assignments. The fact that this challenge, this calling, this open door landed in your life is not random.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works "which God prepared in advance for us to do." Your purpose isn't something you manufacture. It's something you discover — already waiting, already designed, already yours.
