The Tool That Found Its True Purpose

In 2012, a small company called Tiny Speck shut down its online video game, Glitch. Years of work, millions of dollars — gone. By every measure, the project had failed. But buried inside that failure was something no one expected. While building the game, the team had created an internal messaging tool to communicate across departments. It was fast, searchable, and organized conversations into channels. When the game died, that little tool lived on.

They called it Slack.

Today, Slack connects millions of people across the world. The thing the team thought was the point — the game — was never the point at all. The tool they built along the way, almost as an afterthought, turned out to be the real purpose all along.

Scripture is full of people who discovered that God's purpose looked nothing like their plan. Moses thought he was a fugitive shepherd. Ruth thought she was just gathering leftover grain. David thought he was just tending sheep. None of them could see the larger design their ordinary faithfulness was serving.

You may be in a season where the thing you poured yourself into has collapsed. You may feel like a failed project. But the God who declares, "I know the plans I have for you" (Jeremiah 29:11) wastes nothing. The skills you built, the character you forged, the compassion you learned in the breaking — that may be exactly what He was building all along.

Your detour might be His destination.
