The Trees That Couldn't Stand

In the early 1990s, scientists sealed themselves inside Biosphere 2, a massive glass enclosure in the Arizona desert designed to replicate Earth's ecosystems. They controlled temperature, humidity, and atmosphere with extraordinary precision. The trees inside grew remarkably fast. But then something strange happened — they began falling over before reaching maturity, toppling under their own weight.

The problem? There was no wind.

Scientists discovered that trees need the stress of wind to develop what botanists call "reaction wood" — the dense, structural tissue that gives a trunk its strength. Without that repeated bending and swaying, the trees grew tall but brittle. They looked healthy on the outside but lacked the internal fortitude to bear the weight of their own growth.

James wrote that the testing of our faith produces perseverance, and perseverance must finish its work so that we may be "mature and complete, not lacking anything." We often pray for God to remove the wind from our lives — the financial pressure, the difficult relationship, the season of unanswered questions. But the Almighty, who designed both trees and souls, knows that resistance is not the enemy of growth. It is the very mechanism of it.
