The Tunnel Nobody Could See

In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne spends nineteen years inside the walls of a brutal prison for a crime he did not commit. Night after night, he chips away at the concrete wall behind a poster with a tiny rock hammer — a tool so small his friend Red jokes it would take six hundred years to tunnel out. But Andy keeps going. He endures beatings, isolation, and the suffocating weight of injustice. Then one stormy night, he crawls through five hundred yards of sewer pipe and emerges into the rain on the other side, arms raised to the sky, finally free.

What strikes me every time I watch that scene is this: for nineteen years, nobody could see what Andy was building. The guards didn't see it. The warden didn't see it. Even Red, his closest friend, didn't see it. But Andy never stopped working toward a freedom that was invisible to everyone else.

Hope works like that in the life of a believer. The Apostle Paul wrote, "Hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?" (Romans 8:24). There are seasons when God is doing something in your life that no one around you can see — and maybe even you can barely sense it. But the Almighty is chipping away, night after night, working all things together for your good.

Don't stop trusting the process you cannot yet see. Your storm-soaked morning of freedom is coming.
