The Unhewn Stone Altar: Simplicity and Christ's Sufficiency
Exodus 20:25 forbids fashioning the Lord's altar with hewn stone or any tool of human craft. This prohibition teaches three vital truths about worship.
First, ritualism is not necessary for genuine worship. The rough altar of unhewn stones serves as adequately as the temple where wealth lavishes contributions and art exhausts its genius. True worship is spirit and life, not mere form or ceremonial service.
Second, human ornamentation must be excluded from worship. No tool may improve what God has appointed. Cultivating the soul in true devotion—as Elohim requires—demands far more than financial expenditure; it requires the death of human pride.
Third, worship possesses universal accessibility. It is not confined to sacred places or privileged persons. As earthen altars suffice, where exists the person who cannot construct them? The poorest believer stands equal before Adonai.
