The Universe Beneath Our Feet
In a single teaspoon of healthy soil, there are more microorganisms than there are people on the entire planet — roughly eight billion bacteria, fungi, and protozoa working in concert. Dr. Elaine Ingham, the soil microbiologist who pioneered the Soil Food Web framework, spent her career revealing what most of us walk over without a second thought. These invisible creatures break down dead matter into nutrients, create the conditions for roots to drink, and quite literally make life on Earth possible. Without them, nothing grows. Nothing.
Yet they are invisible. Unnamed. Uncelebrated. They do the most essential work in creation from the lowest place imaginable — the dirt beneath our feet.
Jesus told His disciples that the greatest among them would be the servant of all. He wrapped a towel around His waist and knelt to wash feet caked with the dust those very microorganisms had helped create. The Son of God chose the lowest position because He understood what soil biology confirms: the most life-giving work often happens out of sight, beneath notice, in the humble dark.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is being so committed to the flourishing of others that you do not require the spotlight to do your work. The question for us is simple: Are we willing to be the teaspoon — invisible, essential, and faithfully giving life?
