The Unsubscribe Button

You know the ritual. You open your inbox and there they are — forty-seven emails you never asked for. The clothing store you bought one shirt from three years ago. The airline you flew once in 2019. The meal kit service you tried for a week. Every morning, you delete them. Swipe, swipe, swipe. It takes five minutes of your day, every day, and you have just accepted it as normal.

Here is what is remarkable: every single one of those emails has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. It has been there all along — the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 requires it by federal law. One click, confirm, and that sender never bothers you again. But instead of clicking it, most of us just keep managing the clutter. We delete the same emails day after day, week after week, choosing the familiar burden over the thirty seconds it would take to be free.

I wonder how many of us do the same thing with the burdens we carry spiritually. The guilt we rehearse every morning. The grudge we nurse but never release. The habit we manage but never surrender. Jesus stands at the center of our cluttered lives and says, "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). The unsubscribe button from our bondage has always been there.

We just have not clicked it yet.
