The Update That Looked Like a Shutdown

When Apple pushes a major iOS update, millions of people tap "Install Now" and then face something unnerving: their phone goes dark. The screen shows nothing but an Apple logo and a thin progress bar inching forward. For thirty, forty, sometimes sixty minutes, the device appears lifeless. No calls, no texts, no apps. If you didn't know better, you'd think the phone was broken.

But beneath that still, dark screen, something remarkable is happening. The entire operating system is being rewritten. Millions of lines of code are being reorganized. Security vulnerabilities are being patched. New capabilities the phone never had before are being installed at the deepest level of the device. The transformation is so thorough that the phone must become temporarily unusable for the new version to take hold.

James tells us to "let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:4). There are seasons in the Christian life that feel like that dark screen — seasons when God seems silent, when growth appears stalled, when nothing visible is changing. We're tempted to force a restart, to abandon the process, to go back to the old version of ourselves.

But God is not idle in the waiting. He is rewriting the operating system of your soul — replacing fear with faith, bitterness with grace, self-reliance with surrender. The progress bar may barely move, but the Engineer of your salvation knows exactly how long the update takes.

Don't interrupt the install. The new version of you is almost ready.
