The Version History God Never Keeps
When you work in Google Docs, every edit is automatically saved in the version history. Click "File," then "Version history," and you can scroll back through time — every typo, every deleted sentence, every embarrassing first draft preserved in perfect detail. Nothing is truly gone. You can restore any previous version and see exactly what was written, and when it was written.
Our wounded hearts often work the same way. Someone hurts us, and we say we forgive — but we keep a version history. We can pull up the offense at a moment's notice, replay it word for word, and restore it to the present as though it just happened yesterday. We archive the pain and timestamp every wrong.
But when God forgives, He does not keep a version history. The prophet Micah declares that the Almighty "will hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea" (Micah 7:19). The psalmist writes, "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us" (Psalm 103:12). There is no scrolling back. No restoring previous versions of your sin. No timestamp on your failures.
The next time you are tempted to pull up someone's past — or your own — remember this: the God of the universe has chosen to delete the version history forever. And He invites us to do the same.
