The Voice They Could Not Contain

In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let Marian Anderson, a Black contralto, perform at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. They tried to silence one of the greatest voices of the twentieth century simply because of the color of her skin.

But freedom has a way of finding open air.

On Easter Sunday that year, Anderson stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and sang to a crowd of seventy-five thousand people. She opened with My Country, 'Tis of Thee — "sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing." Her voice carried across the National Mall, past every barrier that had been built to hold it back.

No wall was thick enough. No rule was strong enough. The gift God placed inside her could not be contained.

The Apostle Paul wrote from a Roman prison, "The word of God is not chained" (2 Timothy 2:9). Human systems can lock doors and deny stages, but they cannot imprison what the Almighty has set loose.

Maybe you feel contained today — by circumstances, by other people's opinions, by chains you didn't choose. But the God who gave Marian Anderson her voice is the same God who breathed life into you. And what He has purposed to be free, no one can hold captive.

His freedom doesn't need permission. It only needs an open sky.
