The Waiting Room Inside the Chrysalis

Inside a monarch chrysalis, something astonishing happens — and it looks nothing like progress. The caterpillar's body dissolves. Muscles, organs, nearly everything breaks down into a formless cellular soup. To any outside observer, it would look like destruction, not transformation.

But hidden within that apparent chaos are clusters of cells that scientists call imaginal cells — tiny groups that have been dormant since the caterpillar was born. They carry the blueprint for wings, antennae, compound eyes. Slowly, over ten to fourteen days, they organize the surrounding material into something entirely new.

Here is what strikes me: if you opened the chrysalis on day five to check on progress, you would kill the butterfly. The process cannot be rushed or inspected. It demands a kind of sealed, hidden patience.

God works like that in our lives sometimes. There are seasons when everything familiar seems to dissolve — a career, a relationship, a sense of purpose — and we cannot see what He is building. We feel formless. We wonder if anything is happening at all.

But the Almighty who placed imaginal cells inside a caterpillar before it ever needed them has already planted the seeds of your next season deep within you. The transformation is underway. You simply cannot open the chrysalis early.

"Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage" (Psalm 27:14). Some of God's finest work happens in the soup.
