The Web That Held Us All Together

In E.B. White's Charlotte's Web, a young pig named Wilbur faces slaughter until an unlikely friend intervenes. Charlotte, a small gray spider, begins weaving words into her web — "SOME PIG," "TERRIFIC," "RADIANT" — to convince the farmer that Wilbur is too remarkable to kill.

But here is what we often miss: Charlotte cannot save Wilbur alone. She needs Templeton the rat, selfish as he is, to bring her words torn from magazine clippings. She needs the sheep to spread the news. She needs the geese to keep watch. The entire barnyard becomes an imperfect, squabbling community united around one purpose — keeping Wilbur alive.

Charlotte herself will not survive to see the full fruit of her labor. She dies at the county fair, far from home, having poured out everything she had. When Wilbur asks why she did it, her answer is simple: "You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing."

This is what the Apostle Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 12 — a body made of many parts, none dispensable, each contributing what only they can give. Real community is never a gathering of the like-minded and equally gifted. It is a collection of imperfect creatures who discover that their different gifts, even their flaws, become instruments of grace when offered for one another's sake.

No one is saved alone. The God who made us made us for each other.
