The Weight of Silver Candlesticks

In the 2012 film Les Misérables, there is a moment that should stop every Christian cold. Jean Valjean, played by Hugh Jackman, has just been released after nineteen years of hard labor. Hardened, bitter, and desperate, he is taken in by the Bishop of Digne, who feeds him and gives him a bed. Valjean repays this kindness by stealing the Bishop's silver in the night.

When the police drag him back the next morning, the stolen silver spilling from his coat, the Bishop does something that defies every human instinct. He looks at Valjean and says, "I gave them to you." Then he hands Valjean two silver candlesticks as well, whispering that he has bought his soul for God.

Watch Hugh Jackman's face in that moment. You can see the wall crack. Not because someone punished him into change, but because someone loved him when he deserved nothing. That unearned grace shattered something inside him that nineteen years of chains never could.

This is the gospel in a single scene. The Almighty does not wait for us to clean ourselves up. He meets us with silver still stuffed in our pockets and says, "You are Mine." Paul wrote it plainly: "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Transformation never begins with our effort. It begins the moment we stand stunned by a grace we did not earn and cannot repay.
