The Weight She Laid Down

In July 2021, Simone Biles was the most decorated gymnast in history, carrying the expectations of an entire nation into the Tokyo Olympics. Then she did what no one expected — she stepped away. Mid-competition, she withdrew from multiple events, revealing she had developed "the twisties," a dangerous condition where a gymnast loses spatial awareness in mid-air. Critics called her weak. Commentators questioned her commitment.

But Biles understood something profound: she would never fly freely while carrying a weight she was never meant to bear. The pressure to be perfect, to perform for everyone else's approval — it had become a cage disguised as a crown.

Three years later, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Biles returned at age twenty-seven. She won three gold medals and a silver, becoming the most decorated American Olympic gymnast in history. But what made Paris different wasn't the medals — it was the joy on her face. She competed with a freedom that Tokyo never saw, because she had learned to lay down the burden of other people's expectations.

The writer of Hebrews tells us to "lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us" (Hebrews 12:1). Sometimes the heaviest weight we carry isn't sin — it's the desperate need for approval, the fear of disappointing others, the chains of perfectionism we mistake for faithfulness.

True freedom doesn't come from performing harder. It comes from releasing what was never ours to carry and trusting the God who calls us His Beloved — not because of what we do, but because of who He is.
