The Whole Body Employed in God's Praise
When David declares, "My soul shall be joyful in the Lord," he does far more than offer polite gratitude. Many people attribute their deliverance to fortune or their own skill, yielding only scattered praise to God. David refuses this half-hearted response. His soul shall rejoice not in a deliverance whose author remains unnamed, but explicitly in the salvation of God.
To strengthen his commitment, David assigns his very bones the office of declaring divine glory. As Calvin observed, David is not content to employ merely his tongue in worship. Instead, he applies every member of his body—sinews, bones, and all—to the work of setting forth God's praises. This hyperbolic language reveals something profound: David's love for God burned so intensely that he desired to spend his entire physical frame in declaring the reality and truth of his devotion.
This is not casual thanksgiving. This is total-life worship, where the body itself becomes an instrument of praise. When we receive deliverance from danger, when God grants salvation sōtēria (Greek: wholeness and rescue), our response must be equally comprehensive. Not a private joy kept hidden in the heart, but a public declaration written across the very substance of our existence. Every bone, every sinew—our whole being—should testify to what God has accomplished.
