The Wind That Makes Us Strong

In the early 1990s, scientists inside Biosphere 2 — a massive sealed ecosystem in the Arizona desert — watched something puzzling unfold. Their trees grew quickly, stretched tall toward the glass ceiling, and then simply fell over. Healthy-looking trees toppled under their own weight without warning.

The missing ingredient? Wind.

In nature, when wind pushes against a young tree, the mechanical stress triggers a response scientists call thigmomorphogenesis — the production of reaction wood, denser and stronger fibers that reinforce the trunk from the inside out. Every gust is a kind of training. The tree does not just survive the wind. It is shaped by it, growing more resilient with each storm.

The Biosphere 2 trees had everything — perfect soil, controlled temperature, steady water. Everything except resistance. And without resistance, they never developed the strength to stand.

We pray for calm. We ask the Almighty to remove every hardship from our path. And sometimes He does. But other times, He lets the wind blow — not to break us, but to build something in us that comfort alone never could. Paul understood when he wrote, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4).

Courage is not grown in greenhouses. It is grown in the wind.
