The Window You Cannot See From Outside

Stand inside Chartres Cathedral on a bright afternoon and look up at the great rose window — forty feet of glass assembled from thousands of individual fragments, each one cut, shaped, and fitted into lead framing by thirteenth-century artisans whose names we will never know. The colors are staggering. Ruby and sapphire and emerald pour across the stone floor like something spilled from heaven.

But here is what stops me every time I think about it. Walk outside the cathedral and look at that same window from the other side. You see almost nothing. Dark, flat, lifeless. The iron framework looks heavy and crude. The glass appears muddy. You would never guess that anything beautiful was happening there at all.

The difference is the light. From inside, the sun passes through the glass and reveals what was always there — the story, the color, the glory. From outside, you see only the framework holding it all together.

Faith works the same way. From the outside, a life of trust in God can look unremarkable, even foolish. The framework of obedience, prayer, and surrender does not always make sense to those watching from a distance. But from inside that life — when the light of God's presence shines through every fractured, carefully placed piece of your story — something luminous emerges.

You may be in a season where your life feels like dark glass in a lead frame. Keep standing where the light can reach you. The window was never meant to be admired from the outside.
