The Windows the Whole Town Built

Walk into Chartres Cathedral southwest of Paris and look up. One hundred and seventy-six stained glass windows blaze with color, most of them original, dating back eight hundred years. What strikes you isn't just their beauty — it's who made them possible. Look at the lower panels of many windows, and you'll find images of bakers kneading dough, furriers stretching pelts, money changers counting coins. These were the donor portraits — the medieval guilds who funded each window. The butchers' guild gave one. The weavers gave another. Coopers, blacksmiths, water carriers — each trade pooled its resources to contribute one piece of the whole.

No single guild could have filled that cathedral with light. A butcher alone would have left one hundred and seventy-five windows dark. But together, an entire town illuminated a place of worship that has drawn pilgrims for eight centuries.

Paul writes, "From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work" (Ephesians 4:16). The church works the same way. Your gift may feel as modest as a water carrier's wages. But placed alongside the gifts of others, it becomes part of something radiant — something no one of us could build alone, but all of us can stand inside together.
