The Wings Were Already There
In the 1660s, Dutch naturalist Jan Swammerdam peered inside a caterpillar and discovered something astonishing — tiny folded structures that looked like the beginnings of butterfly wings, hidden beneath the skin of a crawling creature. Modern developmental biologists now call these imaginal discs: clusters of cells present from a caterpillar's earliest days, carrying the complete blueprint for wings, compound eyes, and antennae, waiting quietly while the creature knows nothing but leaves and the ground beneath it.
When metamorphosis begins, the caterpillar's old body largely dissolves. Nearly everything it was breaks down. But those imaginal discs survive and, freed from the constraints of the old form, they rapidly build an entirely new creature designed for flight.
Paul writes to the Galatians, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free" (Galatians 5:1). The freedom God offers isn't imported from the outside. When the Holy Spirit takes up residence in a human heart, He plants the blueprint for a new creation. But that design can't fully emerge until we surrender the old life — the crawling, consuming existence we've always known.
A caterpillar doesn't become a butterfly by trying harder to crawl. It becomes one by letting the old self go. The wings were already there, waiting. Yours are too.
