The Wood That Only Wind Can Build
In the early 1990s, scientists sealed themselves inside Biosphere 2, a massive glass enclosure in the Arizona desert designed to replicate Earth's ecosystems. The trees inside grew remarkably fast — faster than anyone expected. But then something strange happened. Before reaching maturity, the trees began falling over. They simply toppled under their own weight.
The researchers discovered the problem: there was no wind inside the dome. Without wind pressing against them, the trees never developed what botanists call "reaction wood" — the dense, reinforced fibers that form when a trunk is forced to push back against resistance. In the stillness of that controlled environment, the trees grew tall but hollow in strength. They had never learned to brace themselves.
There is a courage that only forms under pressure. We pray for the windless life — no conflict, no resistance, no struggle that bends us sideways. But the Almighty, who designed both the tree and the gale, knows something we often forget: strength is not the absence of opposition. It is what grows in response to it.
Joshua was told three times in a single conversation to "be strong and courageous." Why the repetition? Because courage is not a one-time decision. It is reaction wood — built slowly, ring by ring, each time we choose to stand when the wind says fall.
The next time life pushes hard against you, remember: that pressure is not punishment. It is the wind your soul needs to stand.
