The Worn Groove in the Kitchen Floor

In a small house on Maple Street in Grand Rapids, Michigan, there is a spot in front of the kitchen sink where the linoleum has worn thin. Ruth Hendricks stood there every evening for thirty-one years, washing dishes after supper while her three children dried. But she was never just washing dishes.

Proverbs 22:6 does not promise that training a child will be dramatic. Sometimes it looks like a woman at a sink, night after night, wearing a groove into the floor and into a soul — a path so deep that forty years later, her children still walk in it.
