Theological Perspective: Technology & Human Connection - Commentary
In our rapidly evolving world, the intersection of technology and human connection poses both a challenge and an opportunity for us as followers of Christ. Paul’s words in Galatians 3:28 resonate profoundly in this context: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” This radical proclamation speaks to the heart of our faith, affirming the inherent dignity of every person created in the image of God.
Imagine a bustling city square, filled with people of every background, each one clutching their smartphones, their heads bowed, seemingly lost in the digital world. Yet, amidst this sea of isolation, the question arises: How do we, as the body of Christ, engage with our neighbors in authentic community? Our theological convictions compel us not to retreat into the comfort of our devices but to step boldly into the lives of those around us, to reclaim the sacred call to relationship that God envisioned from the beginning.
As Anabaptists, we are reminded of our commitment to community and mutual aid. Let us ask ourselves: How does our use of technology serve to lift up human dignity and divine sovereignty? Are our online interactions fostering genuine connections, or are they merely surface-level engagements?
In a time when loneliness can echo louder than ever, may we take proactive steps to reach out, not just through screens, but through the warmth of human touch, the power of a shared meal, or a simple act of kindness. Let us not forget that our faith demands engagement—real, messy, beautiful engagement that reflects the unity we have in Christ, drawing us closer to one another and to Him.
