Three Billion Miles of Patience
When NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto in July 2015, it captured stunning images of a world no human eye had ever seen in detail. But here is what most people never realized: it took over fifteen months to download all those photographs. The spacecraft was three billion miles from Earth, and its radio signal — traveling at the speed of light — still needed four and a half hours just to reach us. The transmission rate was roughly one kilobit per second, slower than a dial-up modem from the 1990s. Scientists who had already waited nine years for the spacecraft to reach Pluto now had to wait another year to see everything it had found.
There was no way to speed the signal. No software patch for the speed of light. The distance demanded patience.
James understood this kind of waiting. "Let patience have its perfect work," he wrote, "that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:4). God's work in us often resembles that long transmission from the edge of the solar system — faithfully sending, one small packet at a time, across distances we cannot shorten. The signal is always coming. The picture is always forming. But some things can only arrive at the speed of faithfulness, not the speed of our demand.
The data from Pluto was worth every month of waiting. So is what God is building in you.
