Three Dimensions of Our Possession of God
The psalmist declares, "This God is our God for ever and ever." These words contain the language of a proprietary—a claim of ownership and intimate belonging. John Owen, in his profound reflections on the church's preservation, identified three distinct dimensions within this declaration.
First, we possess an assured proprietary—"This God is our God." This is not tentative faith or wavering hope. The believer speaks with absolute certainty of divine ownership. God belongs to us; we belong to Him. This certainty anchors the soul when circumstances shake and enemies press in.
Second, we claim a permanent proprietary—"for ever and ever." This possession transcends temporal limitations. Unlike earthly inheritances that fade or crumble, our relationship with the Almighty Adonai extends beyond death itself, throughout eternity. No creditor can foreclose; no thief can steal what belongs to us eternally.
Third, we experience an exulting proprietary—a joyful, triumphant ownership that stirs the heart to praise. This is not a cold, legalistic claim but vibrant recognition that produces worship and thanksgiving.
