Three Dimensions of Unashamed Hope in God
The psalmist declares, 'I hope in thy commandments' (Psalm 119:166), and Spurgeon identifies three inseparable aspects of this unashamed hope.
First, a hope which is not ashamed. The believer's expectation rests not upon the shifting sands of human opinion or circumstance, but upon the immovable promises of Adonai. When the wicked mock and the world sneers, the child of God stands firm, for shame cannot attach itself to trust placed in the Eternal One.
Second, a life which is not ashamed. This hope produces visible fruit. The psalmist's conduct reflects his confidence—his behavior becomes a testimony. He keeps God's commandments not from fear of discovery, but from love rooted in unashamed hope. His life becomes a living epistle, readable by all who observe him.
Third, a God of whom he is not ashamed. This is the foundation stone. The believer glories in Yahweh without hesitation. He speaks the name of his God boldly in marketplace and home. Unlike those who serve false gods or hollow pursuits, the servant of the true God carries no secret shame about his Master's character or worthiness.
