Three Divine Attributes That Banish All Doubt
The Psalmist declares, "Gracious is the LORD"—and this single statement dissolves every hesitation we harbor about His willingness to help us. Examine the threefold perfection of Yahweh's character: He is gracious in hearing our petitions, righteous in judging our causes, and merciful in pardoning our transgressions.
Consider how these attributes work together in our favor. The LORD is righteous to reward according to our deserts—we deserve punishment. Yet He is gracious to reward above our deserts—He gives us blessings we have not earned. Indeed, He is merciful to reward without deserts—He pours out favor upon the undeserving.
Each attribute serves a distinct purpose: His grace demonstrates His boundless bounty; His righteousness establishes His unshakeable justice; His mercy reveals His infinite love. When we understand this tri-fold character, doubt becomes irrational.
If Elohim were not gracious, I could never hope He would hear me. If He were not righteous, I could not depend upon His promises. If He were not merciful, I could not expect His pardon. But because He possesses all three perfections simultaneously—gracious and righteous and merciful—how can any soul doubt His will to help us? The very attributes that define His nature guarantee His assistance to those who call upon Him.
