Three Sacred Postures Toward God's Word
The psalmist's declaration in Psalm 119:106—'I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments'—unfolds three profound movements of the believing heart.
First comes VENERATION for the word. The psalmist approaches Scripture not as mere literature but as the utterance of Elohim Theos—God Himself. This is reverence born of recognition: these are not human opinions but divine oracles. A man who truly venerates God's word removes his shoes before it, speaking in hushed tones of its mysteries.
Second emerges CONSECRATION to the word. Veneration alone remains passive; consecration demands surrender. The psalmist does not simply admire the word—he binds himself to it by oath. 'I have sworn,' he declares. This is the laying down of one's own will upon the altar, permitting the word of Yahweh to reconstruct one's desires, ambitions, and daily conduct. Consecration transforms the hearer into a servant.
Third follows FIDELITY to the word. This is perseverance hypomonē—steadfastness—in keeping 'thy righteous judgments.' Fidelity is veneration tested by hardship, consecration proven by time. When opposition comes, when the flesh rebels, when the world ridicules—the faithful believer holds fast to his sworn covenant.
