Through the Darkest Tunnel

In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne spends nineteen years inside a prison he never belonged in. Every night, while the guards sleep and the cellblock falls quiet, he chips away at a concrete wall with a tiny rock hammer — a tool so small his friend Red jokes it would take six hundred years to tunnel out. But Andy keeps going. Night after night. Year after year. Nineteen years of patience and persistence, hidden behind a poster on his cell wall.

And then comes the night he finally breaks through. He crawls through five hundred yards of sewage pipe — filth so suffocating most people would turn back — and emerges on the other side into a thunderstorm. He stands in the rain with his arms wide open, a free man at last.

The writer of Hebrews understood that kind of endurance. "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1). The race is not a sprint. Sometimes perseverance means chipping away in the dark with a tool that feels ridiculously small, trusting that the Almighty sees what no one else can. Sometimes it means crawling through suffering so thick you can barely breathe.

But here is what Andy knew and what Scripture promises — there is an opening on the other side. God does not waste a single night of faithful endurance. Keep chipping. Keep crawling. Freedom is coming.
