Through the Wall
In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne spends nineteen years wrongfully imprisoned. But what the warden and guards never suspect is that every single night, Andy chips away at his cell wall with a tiny rock hammer — a tool so small his friend Red jokes it would take six hundred years to tunnel out. Andy hides his work behind a poster and carries the debris out in his pant legs, scattering it in the prison yard one handful at a time. Nineteen years of handfuls. Nineteen years of patience when every voice of reason said it was impossible.
Then one night, during a thunderstorm, Andy crawls through that tunnel, pushes through a sewage pipe, and emerges on the other side — arms raised to the rain, finally free.
The writer of Hebrews tells us to "run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1). Notice the race is already marked out. God has drawn the path. Our job is not to see the end from the beginning — it is to keep chipping, keep crawling, keep trusting that the Almighty who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it.
You may feel tonight like you are holding nothing but a tiny hammer against an enormous wall. But our God counts every handful. He wastes nothing. Keep chipping. Freedom is closer than you think.
