Trees Marked for Falling: Fruitfulness Over Lineage
Abraham to our father.—The demand of Elohim upon all moral life is practical, not theoretic, nor circumstantial. His requirement is for fruitfulness.
The Jews could boast of their national lineage. The true elements in this claim merit consideration: (1) great moral influence descends from a pious progenitor and imbues our life and feeling; (2) the traditions of pious ancestry are precious; (3) the prayers of pious ancestry carry real weight. Yet the untrue element persists—the assumption that Elohim will merge all considerations of personal character. The true conception of pious ancestry is obligation, not exemption.
The Jews relied upon three substitutes for actual fruitfulness: First, ecclesiastical prerogative—their role as priests and keepers of the temple. Second, doctrinal orthodoxy—correct belief and ritual observance. Third, ancestral merit—the righteousness of Abraham himself.
Yet Yahweh puts us upon probation concerning these practical things to discern whether we will do them or not. Like trees marked for falling, those who bear no fruit in righteousness, who trade inherited privilege for personal obedience, face judgment. The axe is laid to the root. Descent from Abraham avails nothing when the present bearer produces only thorns. Elohim demands the karpos (fruit) of transformed living from each generation anew.
