Twenty-Eight Swings of Grace

On a July evening in 2008, Josh Hamilton stepped into the batter's box at the old Yankee Stadium for the Home Run Derby and did something nobody had ever seen. He launched 28 home runs in the first round, moonshots that left 50,000 fans on their feet chanting his name.

What made the moment extraordinary wasn't the power. It was what came before.

Nine years earlier, Hamilton had been the number one overall pick in the Major League draft — the most talented young player in the country. Then addiction swallowed him whole. Drugs. Alcohol. Suspension after suspension. He vanished from baseball for three years, hitting a bottom so deep that he later said he wasn't sure he'd survive it.

Nobody writes a comeback like that. No scout projects it. No front office bets on it.

But grace does.

The Apostle Paul wrote, "Where sin increased, grace increased all the more" (Romans 5:20). Redemption in the hands of the Almighty doesn't just erase the wreckage — it weaves the wreckage into the story. Hamilton's swings that night carried the full weight of everything he'd been through. The fall made the rising mean something.

That's what God does with every surrendered life. He doesn't hand us a clean page as though the old chapters never happened. He writes the next chapter so beautifully that the whole story — even the darkest pages — becomes a testimony of His relentless grace.
