Twenty Years Through the Wall

In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne spends nineteen years chipping through a concrete wall with a rock hammer no bigger than his hand. His friend Red had laughed when he first saw the tiny tool, saying it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel out with it. But Andy wasn't in a hurry. Night after night, he scraped away at that wall, hiding his work behind a poster, disposing of the dust handful by handful in the prison yard. No one noticed because the progress was invisible — a few crumbles of concrete each evening, barely enough to fill a pocket.

When Andy finally crawled through that tunnel and emerged into the rain on the other side, free at last, it wasn't because of one dramatic moment. It was the accumulation of ten thousand small, faithful acts done in the dark when no one was watching.

The apostle James writes, "Let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." God rarely delivers us in a single thunderclap. More often, He works the way Andy's rock hammer worked — slowly, quietly, persistently — shaping us through years of ordinary faithfulness.

If you feel like nothing is changing, like your prayers are just crumbles of concrete falling to the floor, take heart. The Almighty is tunneling toward your freedom. Keep chipping. The wall is thinner than you think.
