Unbreakable from the Inside Out

In 2007, Corning Incorporated faced a challenge. Apple needed glass tough enough for the first iPhone — something that wouldn't shatter in a pocket or crack when dropped on concrete. The answer was Gorilla Glass, and the transformation process behind it is remarkable.

Engineers take an ordinary sheet of glass and submerge it in a bath of molten potassium salt heated to over four hundred degrees Celsius. During those hours of immersion, something invisible but profound happens: the small sodium ions inside the glass are gradually replaced by larger potassium ions from the salt bath. These bigger ions crowd into the molecular structure, creating a powerful layer of compression across the surface. The glass emerges looking identical — same transparency, same smoothness — but it is now dramatically, almost unbelievably, stronger.

Paul describes something strikingly similar in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here." Transformation in Christ doesn't always change what others see on the surface. You still go to the same job, drive the same car, sit in the same pew. But at the deepest level of who you are, an exchange has taken place. The brittle has been replaced with the resilient. The fragile with the enduring.

God's transforming work doesn't just coat you with something new. He gets down into the very structure of your soul and replaces what was weak with what will hold.
