Understanding Courage - Reflection
Courage is often perceived as the absence of fear, but in Galatians 5:22-23, we encounter a different perspective: courage is a fruit of the Spirit that blooms amidst our fears. The Apostle Paul lists agape love, joy, peace, patience, and the many attributes of the Spirit, culminating with self-control. Each aspect of this fruit is intertwined, and courage, while not explicitly mentioned, is woven into the fabric of these virtues.
Imagine a young mother, standing at the edge of a hospital room, heart racing as she prepares to take her sick child for treatment. In that moment, her love for her child fuels her courage—not an absence of fear, but a willingness to step into the unknown, holding onto hope. This mother exemplifies how faith can transform our fears into a platform for action.
When we align our lives with the Spirit, we cultivate a garden of courage that empowers us to face life's battles. This is not a courage that boasts of our strength, but a humble reliance on God's promises. As we nurture hesed, or loving-kindness, in our relationships, we find the support and encouragement we need to step out in faith.
Let this understanding of courage stir within us: it is about being anchored in hope, knowing that God walks with us through every valley. With the Spirit's help, we can seize each day with a heart full of courage, purposefully sharing the gospel in a world that desperately needs it.
